Introduction to Screenprinting
Learn the fundamentals of screen printing and gain access to Blackbird Book Arts and Press screen printing facilities. This course develops a working knowledge of screen printing, from conception and design to final print. Students will learn the basics of four color printing process and the steps necessary to prepare artwork for printing. Develop a design and explore the printing possibilities from screenprinting artwork on paper to printing t-shirts, bags and more.
Students who complete this course are eligible for independent use of the screenprinting studio with director permission.

Introduction to Letterpress
Letterpress printing is an entirely hands-on process that uses moveable metal and wood type to transfer images and words to paper. The words and images are inked and stamped into paper using vintage, cast-iron machines. These impressions give the images a unique 3D like feel.

Exploring Printmaking: Etching
Etching - An introductory course to printmaking and certification to utilize our printmaking facilities. Take your sketches and drawings and turn them into an edition of prints. Learn the process of translating your image onto a zinc plate, etching utilizing a copper sulfate bath, and the art of inking and pulling a print.

Weekend Screenprinting Crash Course

Leather Wrapped Journals and Sketchbooks
In this workshop, learn how to assemble a multi-signature blank, soft-cover book bound in leather with overlapping closure. Students will consider and discuss types of papers, sewing workflow, and basic leather techniques. Create an excellent, functional book to use for your own pondering, drawing, or writing, or give as a special gift.

Pocket Concertina Books
Create a book with pockets, envelopes, and secret compartments to carry messages, express ideas, or store photos. Learn a variation on the accordion structure, utilize decorative papers, mixed-media, sewing, and gluing techniques. Design and build a special, one-of-a-kind book to give as a gift, or as a remembrance of someone special. Participants are encouraged to bring ephemera, quotes, small photos, and other objects of personal importance.
