Screenprinting Weekend Crash-Courses

Certification Class

Learn the fundamentals of screen printing and gain access to Blackbird Book Arts and Press Screen printing facilities! This course develops a basic understanding of screen printing. Develop a simple design and explore the printing possibilities from screenprinting artwork on paper to printing t-shirts, bags and other swag. Students who complete this course are eligible for independent use of the screenprinting studio with director permission. Open studio for printmaking currently runs on Sundays 2-6pm and students are encouraged to come in and practice.

Special Topics in Screenprinting 

These classes can be taken individually or beginners can take both for studio certification. They are  appropriate for beginning screenprinters or those wishing to expand their techniques.


Hand Painted Screens

Come learn to screen print with us and get certified to utilize our screenpintingr studio. In this special topics course we will be exploring working with drawing fluid and creating hand painted screen prints.  Develop a dynamic and painterly image through multiple layer screen printing.  We will be examining color layering and the process of building up an image.  Come work with and get to know our expanding print making collective as you lean a new technique or refresh you memory.

Screen Printing:  Photo Reproduction

Learn to screen print and get certified to utilize our screenpinting studio. In this special topics course we will be exploring photographic reproduction, through four-color process half tones as well as spot color with layered halftones.  We will examine methods for translating your photograph to the medium of screen printing and manipulating photos to reproduce well.  Come work with and get to know our expanding print making collective as you lean a new technique OR refresh you memory .

Posters for Social Change: Then and Now

From the suffragetes to anti-war movements, posters have long been integral to inspiring social change and educating people about political ideas. The two part workshop will showcase a range of printed material that have made a big impact on the world and talk about how some of the designs and ideas are still used today. We'll also look at the different techniques used to make political art, especially  screenprinting and block printing.

Best of all, you'll get to create your own political poster and take it home. The first half of the workshop will be devoted to exploring ideas and designing your two-color poster and in the second half of the workshop we'll print it in multiples. You are welcome to BYO laptop if you prefer designing on a computer. There will also be stock images, fonts and a couple of spare laptops available.

Screenprinting on Clay

Learn this exciting technique that combines processes of both silkscreen printing and clay handbuilding! Begin with a black and white image and learn to "burn" a silkscreen using a photo emulsion method.  Students learn a variety of  clay slab handbuilding techniques  and create individual boxes or panels. They'll "burn" screens in the printmaking studio, then choose underglaze colors and learn to pull a print on clay. Project will go through two kiln firings and be ready in approximately 2-3 weeks.

Cost: $75 includes all materials and kiln firings.
