Explore the wondrous world of winged creatures big and small. Learn about native and exotic butterflies, lightning bug beetles and feathered friends to uncover the many ways critters take flight. Use a printing press to make feather portraits and explore shibori dyeing to create costume wings.

On Wednesday, join artist Phil Wilson to create a butterfly feeder out of clay. Clay pieces will be fired in our kiln and available for pickup (or mailing) in 2-3 weeks.

Studio to Stage: Masks and Puppets (CLASS IS FULL. Please email to be added to the waitlist)

 

Everybody loves a good story! We’ll design and build our own puppet theaters and create clay finger puppets, masks, and wacky hats for imaginary play. We’ll take inspiration from artist Paul Klee’s hand puppets and on Thursday, family and friends can join us as we take to our outdoor stage to unveil the stories we’ve created.

On Wednesday, join artist Phil Wilson to create puppets made of clay. Pieces will be fired in our kiln and available for pickup (or mailing) in 2-3 weeks.

Underground Adventure

The soil is teeming with life—from animals that burrow underground to microscopic critters that enrich our dirt. We’ll look closely at what lives underground—explore an ant farm,  design and paint an underground  home and make art inspired by the amazing world beneath our feet!

On Wednesday, join artist Phil Wilson to create planters for building a miniature garden. Clay pieces will be fired in our kiln and available for pickup (or mailing) in 2-3 weeks.

Float, Fly and Flitter

Art that MOVES! Design and build a high-flying kite, create a kinetic sculpture that flits in the wind, and experiment with a Japanese marbling technique where paint floats on water. We’ll explore the sculptures of Lyman Whitaker in this whimsical week of art and science!

On Wednesday, join artist Phil Wilson to create birds, bees and pollinators out of clay. Clay pieces will be fired in our kiln and available for pickup (or mailing) in 2-3 weeks.

From forts to rings, to animal homes, sap and swings, trees are mysterious and beautiful. Create art inspired by trees—design a walking stick for outdoor adventures and make colorful garden flags for outdoor spaces. Join author and illustrator Brianne Farley as she pops in for a special visit to read from The Secret Tree Fort!

On Wednesday, join artist Phil Wilson to build ice cream bowls using tree leaves and slabs of clay.Clay pieces will be fired in our kiln and available for pickup (or mailing) in 2-3 weeks.

Mysteries of Michigan Lakes

 

We’re celebrating our beautiful Great Lakes through art this week… from sandy beaches and lake perch to Petoskey stones and Leland blues. Build a boat for the beach or bathtub, make a bracelet from a unique stone found on our shores, and print a summer t-shirt using a Japanese printmaking technique, gyotaku. 

On Wednesday, join artist Phil Wilson to create a clay fish puppet. Clay pieces will be fired in our kiln and available for pickup (or mailing) in 2-3 weeks.
