Adults and youth (15+)
Join us for this exciting spontaneous process derived from the Ancient Japanese Tea Ceremony. A brief history, the process, and safety procedures will be discussed. Some amazing glaze effects can be achieved from reduction firing in the outdoor raku kiln! We will also explore the techniques of naked raku using horse hair and dried leaves and experiment with raku glazes for a unique effect. Students may take the two-part class and build their own project, or come for just the firing class and purchase a pre-made bowl from Blackbird.
Session I is Tuesday, August 14, 5:30-8:30pm. Clay handbuilding (and wheel for those with experience): Each students receives 3-5 pounds of clay. No experience necessary for handbuilding.
Session II: Outdoor Raku firing (weather dependent): Thursday, August 23, 5:30pm until all pieces are fired!
Cost: Two-part workshop is $85
Firing only workshop: $35 + bowl (costs are based on size and range from $10-25).
