Ceramics

Blackbird Arts' ceramics studio is a bright, well-equipped studio with six wheels, a handbuilding table, slab roller, extruder, electric kiln and a raku kiln. We offer weekly classes for beginner to intermediate and Open Studio for artists with more advanced skills who wish to work independently. We also offer private lessons, parties, workshops, youth classes, community programs and more.

Intermediate to Advanced Wheelthrowing

Already familiar with the pottery wheel and comfortable centering and throwing a variety of vessels? This class helps move students to a new level in design and execution. We'll explore more complicated forms and ways to combine hand-built and thrown pieces to find your unique style. An instructor demonstrates new techniques each week and students may choose the direction to go with their pottery.

Dates/Times

8 Tuesdays, 9:30-11:30am, begins 4/10 (CLASS IS FULL)

8 Wednesdays: 10:00am-12pm, begins 4/11

Cost:  $255 includes all materials, 25# bag of clay, glazes, firings, and shelf rental. Unlimited open studio time included during the duration of the course.

Beginner and Beyond Wheelthrowing

Learn or refresh the basics of wheel throwing and how to center, open, pull, shape and trim shapes such as cups, bowls and other vessels. High-fire clay and glazing will be covered. Open studio sessions are included FREE in the price, so students can experiment and practice what they learn. We provide lots of one-on-one instruction, so students may work in independent directions.

 Spring Clay Handbuilding

Create works inspired by gardens. Take one class or all four--each week is a different project. These classes give students the chance to try the wide array of clay building possibilities--pinch, coil, slab, extrude, carve and sculpt clay and explore surface decoration, texture and design. These workshops are geared toward beginner to intermediate students.  Your creations will surprise you! 

Dates/Times

Tuesdays 6-8pm, begins 4/10

4/10 - Personalized Pocket Vases - wall hanging vases that begin with large slabs of clay. Add texture, color and small sculptural elements.

4/17 - Garden Bells - Large ornamental chime for outdoor use.

4/24 - Lavender Planters - (CLASS NOT AVAILABLE) Create texture on planters using lavendar plants. Explore a variety of shapes and sizes for indoor or outdoor use. 

5/1 - Bird Head Garden Stakes - (CANCELLED) Create a variety of colorful bird forms for indoor or outdoor decor. Heads are mounted onto small posts for inserting into the ground. 

5/8 - Outdoor Hanging Candles - These outdoor hanging lanterns use coils, slabs and cutouts to bring a glow to outdoor spaces. 

Cost:  $35 per workshop or $155 for the whole series. Includes all materials and kiln firings.

Open Studio Passes (no instruction)

Our open studio passes are for experienced potters comfortable working on their own and without instruction. They allow maximum flexibility while keeping up with skills on the wheel or handbuilding. For potters new to the ceramics program at Blackbird Arts, we require an orientation session to familiarize new students with our procedures. Please email melissa@blackbirdartstc.org to arrange.

Open Studio Membership One Month

Unlimited open studio time for the pottery wheel or handbuilding. Begin any day and continue for 30 calendar days.

Cost: $150 includes #25 bag of clay, glazes, kiln firings and shelf rental.

Handbuilt tiles Workshop

Explore building unique tiles using two different techniques: carving and appliqué. Beginning with a hardened slab of clay, participants carve a design or transfer an image to carve. In the second class we'll explore building up a tile, where the image is raised. Price includes open studio time to work on pieces and enough materials to create 4-5 tiles, all glazes and kiln firings.

Family Wheel

This class is for an adult and child 8+ to  throw together on their own wheels! Roll up your sleeves and learn to turn a lump of clay into something functional.  We'll cover all the basics of centering, pulling, coning and trimming. Once clay pieces are fired in the kiln, you'll select your colors and learn to glaze. Each person will leave with several pieces of unique wheel-thrown pottery. Good, messy, family fun.

4:30-6pm:  4 Thursdays, begins 4/12

Cost: $95/person includes all materials, 12 pounds of clay per person, glazes and kiln firings. Open studio time is included in the price.
