Thursday, July 19, 6-8pm (Adults and adults with children 10+ years)

Create a clay lantern perfect for lighting up  late summer nights. Beginning with a slab of clay, you'll create patterns for light and add small sculptures to personalize it. All you need to do is add a candle and you’ll have soft light for dinners, card playing or summer picnics.

$35/person includes all materials and kiln firings.

Instructor: Phil Wilson

Two Thursdays, August 9 & 16, 5:30-8pm (Adults and adults with children 10+ years)

Explore building unique tiles using two different techniques: carving and appliqué. Beginning with a hardened slab of clay, participants carve a design or transfer an image to carve. In the second class we'll explore building up a tile, where the image is raised. Price includes open studio time to work on pieces and enough materials to create 4-5 tiles, all glazes and kiln firings.

Cost: $65, includes all materials, glazes and kiln firings. Open studio time is included in the price.

Instructor: Phil Wilson

(Adults and youth 15+)

Join us for this exciting spontaneous process derived from the Ancient Japanese Tea Ceremony.  A brief history, the process, and safety procedures will be discussed. Some amazing glaze effects can be achieved from reduction firing in the outdoor raku kiln! We will also explore the techniques of naked raku using horse hair and dried leaves and  experiment with raku glazes for a unique effect. Students may take the two-part class and build their own project, or come for just the firing class and purchase a pre-made bowl from Blackbird.

Session I is Tuesday, August 14, 5:30-8:30pm. Clay handbuilding (and wheel for those with experience): Each students receives 3-5 pounds of clay. No experience necessary for handbuilding.

Session II: Outdoor Raku firing (weather dependent): Thursday, August 23, 5:30pm until all pieces are fired!

Cost: Two-part workshop is $85

Firing only workshop: $35 + bowl (costs are based on size and range from $10-25).

These quick and fun workshops let participants experience the joy of creating with vintage type and machines, while adding a modern twist. Create quirky, artful pieces you can actually use. We have a great selection of retro/vintage images to add to your type.
